Jamie Oliver and Ryan Seacrest: Fattest Town in America
By JULIETTE ROSSANT![]() Think American Idol crossed with The Real World and that's the high energy, life changing kind of show Ryan Seacrest and Jamie Oliver hope to bring to America. According to Broadcast & Cable and other press reports, and Ryan's own twitter messages, ABC has ordered six episodes of an unscripted Jamie to be produced by Ryan Seacrest Productions. The show will go head –to head with NBCs The Biggest Loser. The idea is to put Jamie in one of America's towns full of overweight residents, one of the "fattest" towns in America, and teach the townspeople how to eat right. The town has been selected for the first season and shooting is scheduled to begin in August. Seacrest declines to reveal the town, but says the show will be ready for air as early as January. ![]() Jamie tried this before in the UK. His show, Ministry of Food, that had Jamie teaching the town of Rotherham in South Yorkshire how to cook simple, healthy dishes and make better food and lifestyle choices. This is what Jamie had to say on his website about the Ministry of Food: Although there are loads of great things to say about the state of cooking and food in this country, there are also quite a few negatives. We Brits have one of the highest obesity rates in Europe; we love our ready meals and takeaways and seem to be eating more of them then ever. We really seem to have lost the plot a bit when it comes to passing on our cooking skills from generation to generation - so much so, that some of the people I met in my cooking classes while filming the TV show didn't know how to mash a potato. ![]() If a cooking show, follow-on books, websites, and campaigns can make a change, hurrah! Maybe this show will really teach Americans to say "no" to fatty, calorie-rich take-out and how to start cooking for themselves and their families again. Riding the tails of the Obama Presidency and Michelle Obama's championing of healthy eating, maybe a British Chef can change. This is such a great idea. If it's similar to the original show I think it could take off here in the states and inspire a lot of people to change the way they think about food. Jamie is very likable and I appreciate his emphasis on fresh/local/seasonal ingredients. On a related note, I'm still looking for a US adaptation of You Are What You Eat. Gillian McKeith is a force of nature!
