New York Times Discovers Children's Cookbooks
| By JULIETTE ROSSANT The New York Times published an article on Children's cookbooks today on the large crop of books and video games this year. Parents and educators are cooking with kids. They are noticing that kids tend to eat what they cook and learn important skills from cookbooks. Super Chef has been reviewing and commenting on children's cookbooks since early 2005. Chefs and cookbook writers have been producing good children's cookbooks for many years – books that go far beyond sweets and cute dishes that look like clowns or flowers, though some still include far too much sugar and fat. Super Chef first learned about children's cookbooks from Colette Rossant's Cooking with Colette (Scribner 1975), that introduced children to international food with easy to follow recipes and fun drawings. What the Times missed was the growing trend in picture books that include recipes. Super Chef started a bi-weekly column following this trend in 2005. These books encourage children to read so that they can get to the recipe and create the dish themselves. See a complete list of Super Chef reviews here.
