Mattel's Barbie: TV Chef

By JULIETTE ROSSANT

In the midst of the economic crisis on Wall Street and the political tumult in Congress over the bail out plan, it is refreshing to ponder something fresh, something comforting, something all-American...

Mattel's... Barbie I Can Be TV Chef Playset!

Barbie logo

The playset features a 12" Barbie doll in a wrap front jacket in jazzy red and color swirls, with a denim mini skirt and red knee-high boots. Her long blond hair is clasped in two ponytails that dangle down to her waste. Her kitchen consists of a refrigerator stocked with all sorts of play food, topped by a microwave. She also has a workstation, complete with overhead spotlights, a mixer, and all sorts of accessories.

There is a rolling camera, a hairbrush, and a cue card. Here is some of the product description:
She whips up fantastic meals in her state-of-the-art kitchen with her own magic oven - just put in an "unbaked cake"; then open the door and voila - there's a fully "baked" cake! Push the top of the mixer and it spins.
That sounds exactly like what many TV chefs do! Hasn't Giada DeLaurentiis been fighting off critics of her plunging neckline and food-porn label? Reality and play seem to blend perfectly, don't they?

Now, all we need is Ken as President and Barbie as Vice President in Mattel's Barbie and Ken Solve the Financial Crisis Playset!

I think it's a cute idea...and I'd be a buyer for my daughters. Heck, I got the GI Joe dolls for my sons and they're both Airborne Rangers now! Is it too far a stretch to think that this could be inspirational? Who cares if Giada can cook or that California Bimbo who cooks from cans is no more than eye candy. Are you telling me that Guy Fiedi (pronounced that way, not spelled that way... always wondered about that malaprop, but that's another post) can cook anything that's not "off the hook" good? Their network is replete with poseurs and fake chefs... why not embrace a fake chef Barbie?

So basically they knocked off Rachel Ray with the exception that Barbie is made with less plastic, and is more believable as a chef...
