FLN: Whatever, Martha!

By JULIETTE ROSSANT

Whatever, Martha!

What could be the motivation behind the Fine Living Network's new show?

Whatever, Martha! is hosted by Martha Stewart's daughter, Alexis Stewart and her buddy Jennifer Koppelman-Hutt, daughter of Charles Koppelman, executive chairman of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia? The new show premiers on September 16th at 9:00pm ET.

The press release states that:
Alexis and Jennifer critique library clips of the original "Martha Stewart Living", and in their frank and uninhibited way, take no prisoners as they comment on Martha, her guests and her crafts in a "friendly" roast of America's foremost lifestyle authority.
That is exactly what these two 40-somethings do, but it's hard to apply the word "friendly" to their banter. Martha herself introduces the show on the preview that Super Chef watched, but perhaps she has her own reasons for letting this mean-spirited, pointless drivel on air. It would work if it were really funny, but it just falls flat and sounds petty and nasty.

Whatever, Martha! - families

The idea is to copy the wit of Mystery Science Theater 3000 – which is a good idea - but that is clearly beyond these two hapless women. What passes for wit are bitchy comments that are more appropriate to a B high school movie about mean girls who get their comeuppance then to a show hosted by two adults.

Here are a couple of quotes from the first episode in which Alexis and Jennifer watch a clip of Martha painting a porch.
Alexis: Oh, no. She is doing math now. That is when I stop listening.
Jennifer: Me, too.
[short elapse of time]
Alexis: Do you know I didn't know how to tell time till I was in the second grade?
Enough said.

It must just depend on your sense of humor b/c my husband and I stumbled upon this show and I can't get enough. He is a pretty tough critic and he even lets out a chuckle once in a while while I'm laughing hysterically. Don't get me wrong there are times when it drags a little bit but what can you expect any show has it's ups and downs. Anyway I recommend checking it out, and giving it a chance.
