Board Books: Chaat and Sweets
By JULIETTE ROSSANT How do you inspire a gourmet bebe? One strategy for fighting off the first signs of pickiness is to make sure that toddler try plenty of foods from other lands. Chaat and Sweets (Tricycle 2008) by Amy Wilson Sanger may help you get your fabulous foodie baby off on the right path. (Chaat is the Hindi word for savory snack). This board book is filled with realistic pictures of food, like samosas, bhel puri, and tandori chicken, set against bright collages. There are different textures of cloth, chalk, paper, and beads that make the backgrounds as interesting as the food. The words on the page, like: "I like chutney with paneer pakoras, fritters made of cheese" will prepare you little one to compliment you on your cooking. (The back of the book has a pronunciation guide to help adults get it all right) The book is part of a series of World Snack books. It's fun and informative. It's the kind of book your seven-year old will pick up after the baby is finished.
