Emeril on Fine Living Network

By JULIETTE ROSSANT When is enough Emeril Live! Enough? We'll soon find out. Scripps, which owns both the Fine Living Network and the Food Network, announced that it is premiering new episodes on FLN starting July 7, 2008 at 7pm ET seven nights a week, to be followed by Emeril's new boss's show, The Martha Stewart Show at 8pm. For Emeril-addicts, or anyone not home at 7pm, you can still catch Emeril Live! reruns at 2pm ET weekdays. After the premier week, only the Monday episode will be new on FLN, the rest are reruns. Hmm, that is Emeril Live! at least twice a day, in reruns, except for one episode each week. Why is this news? First, it means that Scripps is trying to pump up FLN by moving Emeril (and Martha) fans there. FLN has about half the audience of FN, and has recently seen the addition of Shopping with Chefs, Molto Mario, Iron Chef Japan and Wolfgang Puck. Even though Emeril's shows were not renewed on FN, he is still hugely popular – though he is not cut from the same cloth as the current svelte, younger, and largely untrained crop of FN stars. Besides the Iron Chef America stars, there are very few hosts left on FN who actually have a fine dining restaurant or who have worked in one for an extended period of time. Emeril and Martha go together…after all Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia bought Emeril Lagasse's non-restaurant properties earlier this year (see Super Chef). Under the terms of the deal, MSLO acquired the rights to all of Emeril’s television programming, including The Essence of Emeril (still on FN) and Emeril Live!, as well as his segments as a food correspondent for Good Morning America. Maybe MSLO will develop FLN for itself or learn the ins and outs well enough to launch its own (think Oprah's OWN)? In any case, if you want more Emeril more of the time, just channel surf.
