Robert Weinstock: Giant Meatball
By JULIETTE ROSSANT Robert Weinstock's Giant Meatball (Harcourt 2008) is far from cute – it isn't particularly meaty looking either, but maybe that is a good thing. This particular meatball is very active. In fact, so active that it is destroying raspberry bushes, and overturning just about everything in town. The town tries to be polite, but the meatball is, well, too much of a meathead to pay attention. It gets what it deserves in the end.The marvelous illustrations in the book hide quirky surprises for the adult reading it. There is a store in town that makes custom dictionaries, another called Sheik Shake Shakes. Mice in the library read exceptional books. There is a pet store called Kit n' Kapoodles, and another called Stinky Pinky that sells fine cheese and ham. ![]() Once you are done reading, you can always wonder how they prepared the meatball (too bad there isn't a recipe – but maybe it was cooked to start with).
