R.I.P. Peg Bracken: I Hate to Cook Book

By JULIETTE ROSSANT

I Hate to Cook Book, by Peg Bracken

Nothing would have peeved Peg Bracken more than Martha Stewart.

Nothing would have pleased her more than Sandra Lee.

Ms. Bracken, who died on Saturday at the age of 89, was a great champion of convenience foods, mixes and canned foods that could free women from the drudgery of the kitchen. Her book The I Hate to Cook Book (Fawcett 1960), introduced women to recipes that humorously cut corners.

Did she love the Cuisinart food processor, the microwave, and take-out?

Would she have championed the current movement of almost home-made food from supermarkets?
