Food Network: 2 Dudes
By JULIETTE ROSSANT ![]() Take one part Ace of Cakes and add one part California surfer dude and one part hip music and you get something the Food Network wants to pass off as Two Dudes Catering, a new show set to premier on Tuesday, October 16th, at 10:30 PM ET/PT. The show seems a obvious knock-off of Ace of Cakes. Emphasize the word "off." The characters on Ace of Cakes are interesting themselves. They have lives and talents that go beyond only cake decorating. Their challenges are concrete, with a focus not on recipes but on technique. Their setting is funky, with lots to be done. Still, they find structure amidst the confusion -- and success. And they exhibit plenty of humor. Two Dudes Catering is a show about a company, Carmelized Productions, run by two friends and their ostensibly fun employees. Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo are based in LA where they run a successful catering company. It is much like Ace of Cakes, except that everyone seems a bit less interesting, at least in the premier, and a lot less mature. One of the workers isn't even eighteen. There are moments when she stands there looking as lost as the audience feels. One dude is the financial guy (Jon) and the other is the whiz at cooking (Vinny). Jon tries to keep Vinny under control, and Vinny tries to focus on his Art. The first gig is a Sushi Party. Vinny goes to a wholesaler and spend $938 on tuna, soft shell crabs, and scorpion fish, the last of which he has never prepared before. Are we curious about how it tastes and whether the spines will poison him? The music revs up and the gloves go on, and both Vinny and Jon filet the scorpion fish. No one gets hurt, and after the scene is finished, you wonder if you missed the drama. The next segment is at Jon's dentist's kid's eight birthday. The menu is less-than-challenging standard kid's food: mac and cheese, cheese pizza and pigs in a blanket. Sure, Jon and Vinny have to get everything finished so they can rush to their other gig, but the food is so unchallenging, so unCalifornian, that it isn't really interesting watching them fix it or have fun with the kids afterwards. The only tension is time: can they make it threw LA's traffic to Malibu. The dudes sport long, loose hair and tattoos. They say stuff like: "Jon is such a cheap ass." And " Our crew, they rock." Who are these guys trying to be? ![]() Wayne and Garth? No, not cooly un-cool enough to be cool. ![]() Bill and Ted? No, not young enough to get away with acting that juvenile. ![]() Hey, how about the two guys in Dumb & Dumber? Maybe... No, they're not straight-out dumb enough to make you walk out of the room or turn off the tube -- -- but they sure get close... There are serious chefs out there who sport the same kind of California surfer dude-rocker-biker look, but these two dudes don't back it up with toughness, challenge and intellect. Is this stuff going to appeal to a younger audience? Maybe the music will appeal, but the eats gotta get better. Meanwhile, Super Chef will stick with Duff & Co. Why would I want to pay these guys to cook food for me when they look like they haven't taken a shower?
I find it hard to believe these two hippie wannabes wouldn't get any hair in their food - yikes - wear a frigging hairnet for hygiene's sake! They look gross. This and "have fork will travel" and a half dozen other shows are really turning the Food Network into a failing project - I want to see cooking - I guess that's why now I tune into my local PBS for Daisy, Todd, Tommy, Lidia, Caprial, America's Test Kitchen, et al. Roberto desde Miami
nice to see a little young flavor on the food network! These guys are great and sure to attract a new demographic to the late night food line up.
Now that's reality TV. These guys are for real - not actors. Imagine the work it takes to bring such high quality food to a different location each time and work in a different environment every day! Stress?!? - much more than filming a show in a studio. Thanks Food Network!
These guys cater for Harrison Ford, and Hollywood Stars everyday. If you want to watch a cooking show go here: http://www.pbs.org/juliachild/
If you want some good, fun entertainment - watch the 2 Dudes.
I finally got to see the show last night, and feel that the Food Network has another hit on their hands. I am glad to see that they are bringing in new talent and not just giving Alton Brown another show. In regards to their look and style, I am happy to see a chef portrayed as something else then a white coat, black pants, and Birkenstock shoes. To compare these two to Bill and Tedd, Wayne and Garth is asinine; I see them more as a Ben and Jerry (like the ice cream company founders). They are a little out there, but they have a product that sells and they are trying to start a company from scratch. I also was able to watch the Ace of Cakes right before their show to compare the two. I do not see how “Super Chef” can say that the people on Ace of Cakes are more interesting. Maybe if 2 Dudes Catering made large hair spray bottles that were edible, you would enjoy it more “Super Chef” (not so super enough to make it onto the Food Network though, you must give them credit for doing something a lot try to do, but few actually accomplish). Anyways, here is to agreeing to disagree.

I have to go with Super Chef and disagree with you. Sadly, 2 Dudes' talent did not make a showing on their own show. Their food was simplistic -- just more shake-and-bake from the Food Network like Rachael Ray or Sandra Lee. If you think a "chef" (these guys are low-level cooks) should aspire merely to mass-market television like Rach, that's a sad outlook for food. Remember once upon a time, when the Food Network actually had real live chefs on their channel?...
Looks like the Dudes' show didn't last very long.

These guys are real chefs and take food serously. Duff and the ace of cakes crew are lame and the bake. I want to see more of the roking chefs rather than some dough boy baker and his lame friends.
