Top Chef a la Osama Bin Laden
By JULIETTE ROSSANT ![]() The Los Angeles Times reported on Wednesday in an article entitled: " 'Top Chef' Boils Over" that: "Top Chef" is the jackhammer of the food world. Even with earplugs, it is impossible to tune out... Now its cooking-as-pro-wrestling-match tentacles are reaching into advertising, as sponsors milk their connections to the programming. All the world's a competitive soundstage. They only scratched the surface of the story. It turns out Osama Bin Laden has been watching the show. (Figures, since Saudis are famous gourmands!) In this parody blog article, Osama rails against Top Chef contestant Casey who substitutes a young hen for a cock in a recipe. ![]() In a challenge involving a chicken, an onion, and a potato, female chef Casey (brazenly uncovered, I might add, face and hands exposed) prepared for some of the greatest chefs of this age a dish that she called "coq au vin". This dish was made with a young chicken in only two hours. Last time I checked, that is not coq au vin. I do not mean to sound like a lunatic fundamentalist, but YOU CANNOT MAKE A COQ AU VIN IN TWO HOURS, ESPECIALLY WITH A YOUNG CHICKEN.Is this (faux) Osama a gastronomic tyrant? If so, he is certainly isn’t the only one. ![]() Jeffrey Steingarten dedicated a whole chapter to "Red Wine and Old Roosters" in his book, It Must Have Been Something I Ate: The Return of the Man Who Ate Everything (Knopf 2002), concerned as he was with the preparation of a proper Coq Au Vin with a suitably aged rooster.
