FOOD FLICKS: Roger Moore's Foie Gras
By JULIETTE ROSSANT As mentioned previously, former James Bond star Roger Moore has been out campaigning against foie gras. In the wake of the ban in Chicago (see previous article), we thought it time for readers to view Mr. Moore's latest film, as it were.NB: This film is fairly graphic, as its intention is clearly to humanize ducks and geese, portray them as victims, and then ask you to take action to stop the "inhuman" treatment of these animals. This propagandistic film short, however, simply pales in comparison to other events in the world, and Superchefblog strongly recommends that foie gras opponents stop to consider the following. First, watch The Meatrix and The Meatrix II, which deal not only with inhuman treatment of infinitely vaster numbers of animals but also the health ramifications for us humans -- even with a bit of (grim) humor. Next, read Amnesty International's report on prisoner abuses at the "American gulag" at Guantanamo Bay. Last, read Seymour Hersh's article "Torture at Abu Ghraib," view the accompanying photos series, and take your pick of the following film super-shorts: Abu Ghraib Video Series (15 seconds each):
Or, if you think you have the stomach for it, go the distance and watch the 15-minute video. (Have you noticed yet that there are no photos from Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo Bay in this article? Now, ask yourself why...) Superchefblog respects political activism. We admire foie gras opponents for their dedication and smarts. We simply find the efforts misguided. ![]() Don't take it from us, though: look at your pal, Roger Moore. He spends more time and effort on humanitarian efforts like UNICEF than anti-foie gras activism like Stop Force Feeding. His official website is proud of UNICEF -- read his story about how Audrey Hepburn introduced him to the organization. Foie gras opponents should stop over-exploiting one-time celebrity supporters, lest they disgrace the memory of real heroes like Ms. Hepburn -- or real victims, like the innocents of Iraq and Afghanistan. (Don't even get us started on Darfur.) Roger that? Foie Gras Investigation (from Stop Force Feeding) Run time: 5 minutes 13 seconds Stay tuned for more "Food Flicks" each Friday!
