A Gourmet Shabbat

Gourmet Shabbat

Where can you find recipes by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Joan Nathan, and Rosely Himmelstein together in one volume?

Gourmet Shabbat: Recipes for a Friday Night Experience, a new booklet distributed free-of-charge by the National Jewish Outreach Program (NJOP) in conjunction with the celebration of the 10th anniversary of Shabbat Across America on March 3, in which more than 650 synagogues of all denominations host Friday night services and a traditional Shabbat meal around the country. The slim volume is a recipe for those new to the tradition for celebrating Shabbat at home on following Fridays.

Ten recipes from Celebrity Chefs are not exactly what you would expect.

Rabbi Yitzchak Rosenbaum, Program Director of NJOP, told Superchefblog:
We specifically didn't choose Jewish food. It just has to be kosher. We specifically included some chefs who are not Jewish. The recipes are typical, and not so typical.
That is definitely true of Bobby Flay's Spanish Spiced Rubbed Chicken with Mustard-Green Onion Sauce (p. 31) which is grilled in true Flay style, meant as a stand-in for the more traditional roast chicken. Wolfgang Puck's Gefilte Fish (p. 29) is brightened with fresh tarragon and a julienne of leeks and carrots – a step up from Mother's brand. Sara Moulton's Grated Carrot Salad (p. 30) is jazzed up with cumin, paprika and cilantro. Plus home cook Rosely Himmelstein's contest winning, Best Chicken Soup (p. 30). These recipes would be good any night of the week.
