Avian Flu: Precious Seafood

With Avian Flu alarms sounding worldwide (see previous article) ever more strongly these days, it is essential that seafood supplies be protected.

Congratulations then are due to the winners of the 2006 Seafood Champion Awards, presented by Seafood Choices Alliance at Boston's seafood show.

The winners of the first annual award include:
  • Marks & Spencer for promoting sustainable seafood

  • Unilever for creating the Marine Stewardship Council in 1996

  • EcoFish, Inc., the New Hampshire-based seafood distributor that sells only sustainable fish species

  • Gourmet Magazine for using sustainable fish in the magazine's recipes and teaching its readership about sustainability

  • Rick Moonen, chef and co-owner of RM Seafood at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, who has became an active voice in the culinary world for the protection of over-exploited species

  • Jacques Pepin for bringing the issue of Caspian Sea caviar to the public
Nine certificates of recognition were also awarded including chefs Traci Des Jardins, Greg Higgins, Peter Hoffman, Nora Pouillon, and Patty Unterman.
